I would like to do Bioterrorism Under Option B. The reason I would like to do this topic is because I would like to learn about it and ways to prevent the spread of outbreaks. Not only that, but I guess another reason I would like to work on this topic is because i'm scared of it actually happening.

I think that since these two subjects are on the front page, they are the main purpose of the site.
3) I would highly recommend this site for the database of diseases, conditions, and injuries, and also the list of Rx drugs. However I would not recommend it as a search engine because when I typed in two searches, I didn't get many results. I got 2 results for Medula and 10 results for Parkinson's which I didn't feel was enough. However, the searches that I did were pretty much all related to the subject I typed in the search.

I couldn't find any. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right places?

2) looking at the front page of the site I could already tell the main focus of the site was anything related to science. I thought that the links on the front page are very helpful because if you press the link it does a search of that subject. I also liked how the site has articles and magazines that you could just press the link to and it automatically searches for the latest "science" news updates.

3) I Liked some of the features that I mentioned about this site, but I would not recommend this site because it looks like a very plain search engine. I think that since it is so plain that no one would probably take the time to really search on that engine because they would probably get bored of the site just by looking at the front page.

I think that personal search engines are useless because there are a lot of professional search engines out there that will search better and with little effort. It took me about 15 minutes to make my own custom search engine; I'm willing to bet that in the same amount of time I could have found at least 3-4 sites that relate well to the topic i'm searching. The advantages to custom search engines is that you can search within sites that you put the urls to. The disadvantage for me was that I had a lot of off topic sites when I searched for something on my custom engine. I'll leave making search engines to the pro's because I had a pretty bad experience with my custom engine.

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. Basically it's a real simple program which lets you "subscribe to your favorite websites. When you subscribe to web sites, you can view all of the site's latest news just like you would view your E-mail in box. A cool feature that is in RSS is not only that it can be viewed like your inbox but all the news that has already been read can be deleted or stored away for another day. Another cool feature is that you can share with just about anyone. One way a student could use RSS is to subscribe to the internet site of a news broadcast station like CNN, then once subscribed the student can get feed the latest news and top stories for a project, as "ammo" to debate topics related to one's major, and it could be used also just to make the student more aware of his or her surroundings.

Del.icio.us could be used by students on a day by day basis. One of many ways students could use del.icio.us could be when they need to use their friend's or the library's computers for a project they had to do research on. Also while using these bookmarks, if they find any new bookmarks, they can save and access them from basically anywhere. Another way someone could use del.icio.us is if they don't already own a computer, they can use this program anywhere too as long as the computer that they use has the delicious button installed on the internet browser's task bar. Tagging is basically writing notes for your bookmarks so that you can remember what you used it for. The bad thing about tagging is that it might take up a chunk of your time, and also on some if not all internet browsers, you can tag the titles of the bookmarks too. The way that the tags that you make compare to the library of congress subject headings is that instead of finding things that are not on the topic you specifically want "library of congress' search engine" you can find things that you choose and they even have info that you wrote about the link "Tags".

Assignment#1 First Blog Post

My name is Jan Patrick Villanueva, and I have been called J.P. since first grade at the suggestion of my First grade teacher Mrs. Ericsson. I am 18 years old and currently live in Union City, I have lived there for about 13 years of my life. What I enjoy most is listening to Jazz, Classical Music, Watching Anime, reading Manga, playing Trumpet and Guitar, Building Gunpla "short for plastic gundam models", Playing video games, and using my PC. Currently I have just gotten into playing the guitar, building resin figures or "Garage Kits" and I plan on playing trumpet in a Jazz band once I get a decent class schedule. Two things that I think no one else in the class has accomplished is that I have won 3 WBA "Western Band Association" Marching Band championships, and in 2006 which was my senior year in high school, My associates and I in the James Logan Wind Ensemble were invited to the Ninth Annual National Wind Ensemble In Carnegie Hall in New York, not only to listen to the national wind ensemble but to be featured as a guest ensemble. This event took place during memorial day. I hope to widen my experience in this class by learning about the library and it's on-line features so that I can have another resource that I can use not only for research, but for learning about new things so that I do not have to stay ignorant to what I do not already know about the world's history.
