I think that personal search engines are useless because there are a lot of professional search engines out there that will search better and with little effort. It took me about 15 minutes to make my own custom search engine; I'm willing to bet that in the same amount of time I could have found at least 3-4 sites that relate well to the topic i'm searching. The advantages to custom search engines is that you can search within sites that you put the urls to. The disadvantage for me was that I had a lot of off topic sites when I searched for something on my custom engine. I'll leave making search engines to the pro's because I had a pretty bad experience with my custom engine.

That's a totally valid response, and in fact search engines like google do a pretty good job of finding relevant hits. Specialized search engines really shine for topics that are likely to pull up a lot of junk on google, like health info. You can configure these personal engines to only return results from the site you select and have identified as trustworthy. Again, not always necessary but good depending on the topic.
